Take a glamorous look at gold-digging with blonde bombshell Lorelei Lee (Megan Hilty) in Encores!’ upcoming staging of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” The musical premiered in 1949 with Tony winner Carol Channing in the role of Lorelei Lee and was adapted into the iconic 1953 film with Marilyn Monroe as Lee. Get a first look at the new Lorelei as Hilty takes on the number “Little Girl From Little Rock.” Directed by John Rando, “Blondes” will be the final offering of the Encores! season, running at New York City Center from May 9 through May 13. Although it’s very difficult to get all the exact details as her make-up artist never betrayed her secrets, it’s fun to talk about the different tricks and details of Marilyn’s make-up. Marilyn had lots of different looks and was pretty natural off camera but this video concentrates on the very glamorous look she had for her movies and poster shoots from 1953 through to the end of the 50′s. Lots of the tricks were geared towards the lighting, film and cameras of the time. I’m creating an illustrative version inspired by her look. Hope you enjoy it! x

Marilyn Monroe sings “Kiss” from the 1953 motion picture “Niagara”. HD 720p Niagara is a 1953 dramatic thriller, film noir directed by Henry Hathaway. Unlike other films noir of the time, Niagara was shot in Technicolor and was one of 20th Century Fox’s biggest box office hits of the year. The drama features Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Cotten, Jean Peters and others. Although it was not written as a star vehicle for Marilyn Monroe, she would dominate the film nonetheless. Along with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire, it solidified Monroe’s status as a bona fide box office draw. Darryl F. Zanuck considered that Monroe’s film potential was worth developing and cast her in Niagara, as a femme fatale scheming to murder her husband, played by Joseph Cotten. During filming, Monroe’s make-up artist Whitey Snyder noticed her stage fright (that would ultimately mark her behavior on film sets throughout her career); the director assigned him to spend hours gently coaxing and comforting Monroe as she prepared to film her scenes. Much of the critical commentary following the release of the film focused on Monroe’s overtly sexual performance, and a scene which shows Monroe (from the back) making a long walk toward Niagara Falls received frequent note in reviews.
